Antique Vinaigrette Pendant In Solid Silver, Nielloed And Vermeil, From The 19th Century
Delicate solid silver vinaigrette pendant, hallmarked with a hare's head. Nielloed exterior and vermeil interior. 4.2 cm long / 2.2 cm wide / 9 grams. Very good condition. Very fashionable in the 19th century, the "vinaigrette" originated from fly boxes and snuffboxes. A modification was made by adding a small openwork grid behind which was a natural sponge soaked in vinegar flavored with lavender or colchicum to combat unpleasant odors. The vinaigrette could be placed in a pocket or bag, and smaller models like this one were generally worn as a pendant around the neck.
