Oil On Canvas – Pointing Dog In A Landscape – French School, 19th Century
Oil on canvas – Pointing Dog in a Landscape – French School, 19th century. Dimensions: 72 x 84 cm. With a richly carved antique frame. Superb oil on canvas depicting a pointing dog (English Setter type) in a hunting stance, set in a hilly landscape at dusk. The animal, rendered with precision and attention to anatomical detail, stands out against a background of wooded hills bathed in the golden light of late afternoon. The elegant posture, the tension of the body, and the finesse of the modeling demonstrate an excellent mastery of the hunting subject. The composition is balanced: a naturalistic foreground with meticulously rendered grasses and branches; a middle ground opening onto a misty valley; and a mountainous background under a dramatic sky with shades of gray-blue and ochre. The work bears a signature in the lower right corner (to be identified), painted in red. Technique: Oil on canvas. Beautiful paint application. Fine rendering of textures (fur, vegetation, atmosphere). Harmonious palette typical of 19th-century animal and landscape painting. Period: 19th century (French school), in the tradition of animal and hunting scene painters. Frame: Magnificent antique carved and gilded wooden frame with floral decoration and relief motifs (garlands, flowers, decorative corner elements). A high-quality, period frame. It particularly enhances the work. Condition: Canvas in good overall condition. Wear and slight signs of age consistent with its age. Frame showing some minor wear and antique patina. Overall, a sound and decorative piece. An old handwritten inscription appears on the reverse of the canvas (mentioning, in particular, "Purebred Dog" and "Houdin" – to be studied).
