Carved Mahogany Wall Shelf, Chinese Chippendale Style, 19th Century
A remarkable openwork wall shelf in solid carved mahogany, in the style of Chinese Chippendale—a style characteristic of Victorian England that masterfully blends Gothic tracery with Oriental-inspired ornamentation. The openwork structure, visually light despite its rich decoration, is organized into several tiers of shelves with scalloped edges, designed for displaying trinkets and porcelain. At its center sits an oval mirror with scalloped sides, its antique glass displaying a beautiful oxidized patina characteristic of period mirrors. The central drawer, with a flat bottom and turned wooden pull, features a carved rocaille cartouche in relief. The back of the piece, visible in the photograph, reveals meticulous solid wood construction, evidence of a skilled cabinetmaker. In very good overall condition, the wood is lustrous, the carving precise, and there are no significant losses.
