This beautiful bronze sculpture is in very good overall condition, with a lovely "chocolate" patina. It is signed Paul Dubois on the back and bears the inscription "F. Barbedienne Fondeur Paris" on the base, as well as the Collas reduction stamp. Paul Dubois (1827-1905) entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1858. He became director of the same school in 1878, influencing an entire generation of artists. He is a major figure in 19th-century French sculpture, renowned for the quality of his bronze work and his style, both classical and expressive.
