Reconstructed 19th-century stone sphinxes. Fabulous monster (born of Typhon and Echidna), with the head and torso of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle, who posed riddles to passers-by near Thebes, and who devoured those who could not solve them. Terrifying!
