Cecil Beaton developed a deep fascination with the Hollywood star Greta Garbo at a very early stage, long before their first meeting in 1932. Although both were involved in other relationships at the time, the photographer fell lastingly in love with the actress. When they met again in 1946, their friendship turned into a romantic affair. Beaton even proposed marriage, but Garbo declined, bringing their relationship to an end. Despite this separation, the photographer continued to produce numerous portraits of the actress between 1946 and 1966.
