The Mythological Subject
The main scene, on the right, shows Hercules (Heracles) confronting the centaur Nessus.
According to the myth, Nessus attempted to abduct Deianira, Hercules’ wife, while ferrying her across a river. The hero struck him mortally with a poisoned arrow. Before dying, Nessus deceived Deianira by giving her his blood, which would later cause Hercules’ own death.
In the painting:
- Hercules is depicted as young and athletic, wearing the typical vegetal wreath and adopting a dynamic pose.
- Nessus appears as a half-man, half-horse figure with a dramatic expression.
- The scene is set in a rocky coastal landscape.
