Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career in drawing, then moved on to intaglio engraving, specifically etching, in 1882. Simultaneously, in 1886, he embarked on a career as a director and set designer, creating shadow puppet shows at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing them with highly innovative colored sets. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself as a leading figure in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted approximately a thousand watercolors).
