Pierre Ambrogiani (1907-1985) Seated Woman

Artist: Pierre Ambrogiani (1907-1985)
Large oil painting on canvas signed by Pierre Ambrogiani (1907-1985), countersigned on the back by the artist, and titled "Seated Woman." A beautiful Fauvist composition enlivened by an alchemy of colors in a vibrant and sunny palette, including sulfur yellow, sea green, sea blue, and bright red. The whole is rhythmically structured by generous and vigorous brushstrokes applied in high relief with a palette knife, creating a subtle sculptural effect. In very good overall condition, original canvas on a sound keyed stretcher. Original giltwood frame. Dimensions: 78 cm x 63 cm / Visible area: 61 cm x 46 cm.

Pierre Ambrogiani, a painter born in Corsica, settled in Marseille. It was on the Cours Estienne d'Orves that the artist established his studio. He quickly became one of the most remarkable figures in 20th-century Provençal art. Known as the "gourmand of colors," he "builds" his works with a palette knife, layering juxtaposed colors. His painting lies somewhere between Fauvism, for the intensity of its colors, and Expressionism, for the extreme power of his realistic vision of nature. The Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris has acquired some of his works. La Vieille Charité in Marseille paid tribute to 50 years of his artistic life. "I dream of painting with the colors of the sun." His passionate work embodied the poetry of an enthusiastic and popular colorist, a lover of still lifes with summer fruits, a builder of landscapes with a powerful architecture, giving the impression of a third dimension. He also cultivated the nude, a subject conducive to all kinds of explorations of line and the subject's occupation of space, in which he would continually work and excel. With his painter and artist friends from the Cours d'Estienne d'Orves in Marseille (Antoine Serra, Antoine Ferrari, René Seyssaud, Auguste Chabaud, and others), they would gather at aperitif time in front of the bar counter at "Le Péano," where the poet would improvise his song, the painter would illuminate it with his sunlit palette, and the journalist would accumulate notes and witty remarks in his travel journal. His close friendship with Chabaud and Seyssaud, so different in their painting styles, was essential to the innovations to come. His name is inextricably linked to those of Pagnol, Giono, Carco, Utrillo, Pignon, Buffet, and Malraux, who served as his guiding lights and mentors. Throughout his artistic career in Marseille, Paris, and elsewhere, he associated with Rouault, Soutine, Chagall, Friesz, Picasso, Audibert, Desnoyer, and other talented figures. He participated in numerous group exhibitions of contemporary French art in France and abroad from 1948 to 1980, including in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, New York, London, Oxford, Philadelphia, Turin, and Zurich. Over the years, he became a renowned figure in France and an internationally acclaimed personality, proudly championing modern art in Provence.
