Sebastiano Bombelli is one of the major portrait painters of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Born in Udine in 1635, he trained in Bologna under Guercino.
Throughout his career, he was very active at the princely courts of Florence, Mantua, Parma, Munich, and for the Emperor of Vienna.
He also trained important artists, including the brilliant portraitist Fra Galgario and Rosalba Carriera.
Bombelli ended his life in Venice, where he excelled in creating highly realistic portraits for the Venetian nobility.
