Madonna and Child with the Young St. John and St. Joseph
Oil on canvas
in 37,40x48,82
The composition presents the Virgin seated, wrapped in a broad blue mantle and a soft, rose-colored garment, as she supports the Child turning toward a small crucifix a foreshadowing of the Passion. To her left stands the young St. John, identifiable by the scroll bearing the inscription “Ecce Agnus Dei,” while on the right St. Joseph observes the scene with a contemplative demeanor. The figures emerge from a dark background through a carefully modulated use of chiaroscuro.
The style, marked by vibrant coloration, idealized faces, and ample, flowing drapery, reflects the artistic culture of late Renaissance northern Italy, with Mannerist influences evident in the construction of the scene and in the stylization of the forms.
