"Wooden Sculpture - Virgin In Glory On A Globe"
Wooden Sculpture - Virgin in Glory on a Globe. This carved wooden religious sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary standing on a globe, a traditional iconography of the Virgin in Glory or the Immaculate Virgin. The Virgin is shown draped, her hand resting on her breast, in a reverent and solemn pose. The drapery is rendered with fluid, rhythmic lines and pronounced folds characteristic of early religious sculpture. The globe rests on a quadrangular base. The sculpture retains traces of original polychromy and a dark brown patina, attesting to its age and devotional use. Likely a European work, probably from the 18th to early 19th century, it was intended for a private oratory or religious setting. Condition: wear, loss of polychromy, and minor age-related alterations. One arm is missing. On display at Galerie Courcelles Antiquités, 97 rue de Courcelles, in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
