An important pair of intricately carved, openwork, and gilded wooden mirrors with splayed sides, made in Northern Italy in the 18th century.
The richly ornamented frames feature an exuberant decoration of finely carved acanthus leaves, florets, foliate scrolls, and rocaille volutes.
The composition is enlivened by a harmonious interplay of curves and counter-curves, characteristic of the late Italian Baroque decorative repertoire.
The splayed sides are elegantly framed and divided into several sections, multiplying the effects of light and depth.
The upper section of each mirror is centered by a remarkable high-relief carved head of a Native American woman, surmounted by a large, gracefully curving foliate wreath.
The lower section is finished with a lozenge.
