Western Europe (Southern Netherlands / Rhineland), 17th century
Carved walnut and wrought iron
Exceptional early alms box carved in the form of a life-size human skull, sculpted from a single block of walnut.
The top is decorated with a cruciform relief, incorporating the coin slot, and fitted with an original hand-forged iron carrying handle.
The rear features a hinged opening panel, allowing the box to be emptied, confirming its original functional use.
The strong modelling of the skull, deep carving and clearly visible tool marks are characteristic of 17th-century craftsmanship.
Such objects were used in ecclesiastical or confraternal contexts, serving as powerful memento mori symbols—reminders of mortality intended to encourage charity and almsgiving.
