"Fragment Of A Paddle, Sepik River, Primitive Art, Oceanic Art, Tribal Art, Oceania, 82 Cm"
Finely crafted paddle top with a beautiful used patina. The dugout canoe remains the primary means of transportation in the Sepilk River valley. Paddles are therefore still used daily. Some are very finely decorated with carvings depicting ancestors, animals, or totemic plants. When a paddle is broken or damaged, its owner often agrees to sell the fragments. This particular paddle depicts two anthropomorphic (half-man/half-bird) figures (two-sided carving). There are signs of use, including a small chip on the nose of one of the figures. Wood. Mounted on a base.
