A small Louis XV period commode stamped Popsel, with a curved front and sides and pinched uprights, it opens with two full-length drawers with concealed support rails. The whole is inlaid with
Tulipe-wood, both end-grain and end-grain (also known as "sole" marquetry*), with King-wood buttresses, on an oak and softwood frame with an oak veneer. Beautiful gilt and chased bronze ornamentation, such as rocaille sabots, keyhole escutcheons, and keys, completes its decoration. The entire piece is topped with a sheet of old red marble** (also called "Belgian red marble"). The Popsel stamp is struck on the front right upright, with a guild mark beside it. Jean Popsel, received as master on July 5, 1755. Dimensions at the marble top: Width at the marble top 68.3 cm, width at the base 64.7 cm. Depth at the marble 40.8cm, at the crate 37.9cm. Height at the marble 78.6cm, at the crate 75.6cm.* The veneer sawing technique known as "sole" or "sausage" involved a 45-degree cut, similar to the "end grain" cut which was 90 degrees; this sawing allowed for less tightly spaced slices than traditional end grain sawing, notably to achieve the so-called butterfly wing pattern.** Old Rance marble was highly prized by Louis XIV for the embellishment of the Palace of Versailles; particularly for the colonnade of the facade, as well as the Hall of Mirrors and the Grand Vestibule, not to mention numerous salons, in the form of porticoes, paneling, and capitals. Jean Popsel, of German origin, was born in 1720; He worked for several years as a freelance craftsman in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine before becoming a master on July 5, 1755. Until the end of Louis XV's reign, he lived on Rue Traversière. He then moved to Rue Saint-Nicolas and continued working until after 1785. His work consists primarily of Louis XV or Transition style commodes and corner cabinets, some adorned with delicate marquetry of flowers, symbols, and trelliswork, others more simply veneered in tulipe wood or mahogany.
