He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1856, where he studied under Émile Signol, François-Édouard Picot, and Félix-Joseph Barrias. He competed for the Prix de Rome in 1859. He contributed to illustrated newspapers, then, between 1864 and 1870, turned to photography, partnering with Michel Berthaud under the name "Helios" [3], without, however, abandoning painting.
