A terracotta statuette dating from the late 19th or early 20th century depicting one of the Incroyables and Merveilleuses. These figures were very popular in post-Terror iconography (Directoire, circa 1795-1799) and were extensively represented in the 19th century, particularly in decorative statuettes. Several details are characteristic: the very tall bicorn hat worn theatrically; the exaggerated tie knotted high on the neck; the defined waist; the fitted trousers; the affected attitude; the cane; and the affected, almost caricatural pose.
