Saint John The Evangelist, Important 19th-century Pastel
Saint John the Evangelist, important 19th-century pastel. A very fine 19th-century subject. Large format for this pastel depicting the Apostle Saint John, known as the Evangelist, patron saint of writers, Freemasons, publishers, artists, and winemakers. His representation evokes several of his attributes and symbols: the eagle represents spiritual height, the book represents knowledge, the cup with the serpent recalls the episode where he tasted poison without dying, and the serpent represents evil vanquished. His hands are those of a beardless youth. Natural wood frame with marquetry. Some wear and small stains, but good overall condition. Free and insured shipping within mainland France.
