"French Lithophane "the Child And The Goat" Circa 1850"
French Lithophane: The Child and the Goat. Dimensions: 9.7 x 11.7 cm. A young child, probably a boy, stands on a barrel to feed a goat that is looking out of a barn door. The child holds a basket, suggesting an offering or a task. In the foreground, a rabbit, farm tools such as rakes and shovels, and bales of hay are visible. The texture of the brick wall and wooden elements is finely detailed. A lithophane is a thin ceramic plate with a relief, ranging in thickness from 1.5 to 4 mm. The porcelain is fired twice at a temperature of 1250 °C. In normal lighting, there is practically no visible image, but a three-dimensional image is created when a light is placed behind it. Lithophanes became particularly popular in the mid-19th century. Placed in front of a candle, they served as bedside lamps or were hung in front of a window. Link to the website:
