Large original color woodcut, printed on pure bamboo paper from the Dap-Cau paper mills in Hanoi (Indochina), signed in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 47/175 on the left.
Very slight creasing in the left margin (see photo), very good condition.

This woodcut comes from a portfolio titled "Fifteen Prints - Indochina," published in Hanoi in 1926 (only the first 75 prints were included in this portfolio). We acquired this portfolio, unfortunately missing two prints, hence this print is offered individually, and 12 other prints from this series are also available (information upon request).
Emmanuel Louis Léger Defert, (Lys, 1878 - Nevers, 1972)*, French wood engraver. A student of Édouard Léon and a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, he received an honorable mention there in 1924 and exhibited his colored woodcuts in 1929: Laos (Village Corner), Dawn, The Quay, The Artisans, and Laotian Night. As a civil servant in Laos, he studied the local culture and promoted its art, which fascinated him. These works bear witness to this fascination.
*These dates are from Wikipedia, which may not always agree with other sources that give his birth year as 1898 and his death date as unknown.
