Limoges Enamel Plate, 17th Century, Emperor Charles III
Artist: Jacques I Laudin "le Vieux" (1627 - 1695)
A Limoges enamel plate from the first half of the 17th century, attributed to Jacques I Laudin, decorated with the profile of Emperor Charles III, known as "the Fat" (839-888). On the rim, scrolling foliage alternates with flowers in six different enamels, typical of Jacques Laudin the Elder. His work is much rarer than that of his nephew, Jacques II, and falls at the transition between the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The counter-enamel is brown and studded with gilt stars. Despite some chips on the rim, the plate is in very good condition, with all the main decorative details present and beautifully preserved in superb colors. Diameter: 18 cm
