Object description :

"France Late 15th, Early 16th Century, Sculptures Of Virgin And St John Of Calvary H 36.5 Cm"
This pair of polychrome wooden sculptures from the end of the 15ème siècle, beginning of the 16ème, was part of the origin of a group of calvaires that stood at the foot of the cross, in the crucifixion scene.

The Virgin, who stood to the right, is depicted here with her head slightly tilted downwards. She expresses her bread with restraint, the hands crossed in a gesture filled with strength and spirituality.
She wears a guimpe that covers the chin and a veil forming a coat that falls into deep folds. We find there the theme of mourners and mourning.

Saint John is recognized by his delicate appearance. Head very slightly tilted, his youthful, beardless face, framed by his hair with soft and wavy strands, reveals a restrained sadness. He wears a large tunic with loose sleeves with a work of draped and harmonious broken folds, characteristics of the time.
His right hand on the heart is a classic iconographic representation, thus expressing his pain and recollection and symbolizing his love and suffering for Jesus. He is missing his left hand that was supposed to hold the Holy Book, his attribute.

Gaps due to time (a hand, hole in the sail among others), small accidents and stings.
Repeats with polychromy.
