"Slant-front Desk In Rosewood And Mahogany, Louis XVI Style – Mid-19th Century"
A superb Louis XVI style slant-front desk, made in the 19th century, crafted from rosewood and mahogany marquetry. Its drop-front is adorned with a delicate floral marquetry design in light and stained wood, framed by an oval rosewood medallion, itself surrounded by mahogany leaves arranged in butterfly wings. This refined ensemble is enhanced by a discreet marquetry fillet, elegantly highlighting the contours of the decoration. The drop-front, fitted with a functional lock featuring a Louis XVI escutcheon surmounted by a ribbon, comes with its finely chased key. It reveals a carefully arranged interior, comprising two small drawers with lens-shaped knobs on either side, surmounted by a wide central niche. An ingenious concealed mechanism provides access to a secret compartment, cleverly hidden beneath a sliding panel. The drop-front is upholstered in new black leather, adorned with a gilt vignette and a central motif. The apron incorporates three drawers, the fronts of which are decorated with geometric marquetry alternating rosewood and light wood in a vertical arrangement. The desk rests lightly on four tapered legs, terminating in brass sabots. An exceptional piece, combining decorative refinement and ingenuity, a testament to 19th-century cabinetmaking expertise. *************Period: Mid-19th century.
