"Gustav Albert (1866-1905) White Frost 1892. Sweden, Crozant School, Osterlind, Gothenburg, 19th Century"
A rare oil on canvas by Gustav Albert depicting a white frost in a landscape, painted in 1892, signed and dated lower left. The painting measures 46 x 38 cm and 52 x 44.5 cm including the frame. I say rare because this is the first time I have offered a work by this artist from the Crozant School, originally from Sweden. This is a very beautiful Impressionist work, created at the very beginning of the modern era of the Crozant School, as it is dated 1892, three years after Claude Monet's visit to the Creuse region. I haven't identified the location depicted; it could be in the Creuse region, Sweden, or the Oise region of France—these three favorite places. In any case, his impressionistic touch is magnificent, and the rendering of this white frost is perfect thanks to a most subtle palette where his dominant color is a slightly turquoise blue-green, with touches of more pronounced blue, white, gray, pink, and finally, a superb sky in orangey tones. A Swedish Impressionist painter born in 1866 in Eskilstuna, he died in Gouvieux, Oise, in 1905. He studied briefly at the Academy of Fine Arts and then at the Valand School of Fine Arts. He stayed with his fellow artist Herman Norrman in New York from 1887 to 1890, where he painted from the outskirts of the city, notably from Staten Island, after which he went to Paris. He lived there for the rest of his life as an artist and member of the French Academy of Arts. He met Allan Osterlind (1855-1938), another exiled Swedish painter who became his friend. It was Allan who took him to the Creuse Valley and to Gargilesse, where he met his son Anders and surely other painters such as Jamet, Detroy, etc. Gustave Albert exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, of which he was a member, and sent them a view of Gargilesse in 1897. The 1900 Universal Exhibition awarded him a bronze medal. Today, his works are sold mainly in Sweden; some even achieve very high prices, regularly exceeding €3,000, with some reaching as high as €10,000. The canvas I am offering is entirely original and in good condition for its age of approximately 140 years! I'm just pointing out a small restoration of 1.5 cm² in the upper left corner of the sky; that's all. Delivered in an antique gilt frame. Artwork guaranteed authentic.
