Large pair of glazed turquoise ceramic Foo dogs. Very good condition.

First half of the 20th century.

Dimensions: H 40 cm, base: 14 x 9 and 9.5 cm.

Foo dogs are not actually dogs but stylized lions. They are a major symbol of imperial China, appearing from the Han dynasty (200 BC). Originally, these protectors were placed in front of imperial palaces or temples, and later in the homes of wealthy merchants or dignitaries. What do they symbolize? Masculine energy (the ball), Yang, which symbolizes power and authority. Feminine energy (the lion cub), Yin, symbolizes protection, transmission, and family. Together, they represent universal harmony. This pair will offer you protection against evil spirits and ensure the protection of your wealth, while also beautifully decorating your home.
