Object description :

"Coco De Mer On Custom Stand"
Beautiful, untreated, rustic Coco de Mer. Never opened, with its contents intact. On a custom black base. The Coco de Mer is the palm tree that produces the largest coconuts in the world. It grows only on the islands of Curieuse and Praslin in the Seychelles. The Coco de Mer's growing location was only discovered in 1768 by a French expedition. Before that, its origin was unknown. One hypothesis was that it came from an unknown palm growing at sea, hence its name Coco de Mer or sea coconut. This fruit, with its somewhat erotic shape, has been associated in its scientific name with a woman's buttocks. Lodoicea callypige, where the species name cally-pige means "beautiful buttocks" in Ancient Greek. The Coco de Mer is a rare and protected species, classified as "endangered" on the IUCN Red List since 2007. Since exporting them from the Seychelles became prohibited, they have become even more sought after and rare to find in Europe.
