Italian Peasants According To Pauline Gauffier
Artist: Pauline Gauffier
A beautiful color print reproducing one of Pauline Gauffier's most famous paintings, "Italian Peasants at the Foot of Mount Vesuvius." Pauline Gauffier (1772-1801), née Chatillon, was the daughter of French parents living in Rome. A student of Jean Germain Drouais and her future husband, Louis Gauffier, she specialized in depicting scenes of daily life in Italy, a decade ahead of Léopold Robert and Hortense Haudebourt Lescot. The painting, completed in 1799, was immediately engraved in London by Clément, using the wrong name (Catherine). The artist's premature death prevented her from achieving the renown she might have attained. The print is framed in a late 18th-century gold leaf frame but is unfortunately torn in the lower left corner. The plate mark measures 33 x 42.6 cm.
