Gaston Balande (1880-1971) Village Of Aunis, Lauzières ~1935. La Rochelle, Ré, Suire, Charente..
A beautiful new oil on canvas by Gaston Balande depicting a village in the Aunis region around 1935, signed lower right. The painting measures 50 x 65 cm and 67 x 78 cm including the frame. This painting is referenced and reproduced in color in volume 2 of the artist's catalogue raisonné. It is indeed a superb post-Impressionist composition by Gaston Balande, who here paints one of his favorite subjects: a village in his beloved Aunis region, probably near Lauzières, La Rochelle, or the Île de Ré. Created around 1935, a period of the artist's maturity, he had mastered his art to perfection. His touch is powerful, he alternates between brush and palette knife, his material is rich, as is his palette where soft greens dominate, along with beiges, ochres, oranges, white, sky blue, etc. Gaston Balande needs no introduction, one of the most famous French post-Impressionist painters with worldwide success, especially renowned for his views of La Rochelle, Aunis, the islands of Ré and Oléron, but also for his period in Etaples at the beginning of his career. However, he also set up his easel in almost all of France, also known for his Orientalist period with his views of North Africa, Greece, Spain, etc. Finally, his genre scenes, portraits, and still lifes—in short, a complete painter with a considerable body of work. He was close to many painters such as Marquet, Suire, and Bichet, and he is obviously part of the Charente school alongside Couillaud, Verger, Langlade, Charlopeau, Chevalier, Charpentier, Lessieux, etc. His son, André Delauzières (1904-1941), was also an excellent painter, unfortunately dying prematurely (see the work I am offering). Gaston Balande's biography is so extensive that I recommend visiting the website of the Association of Friends of Gaston Balande, which can be found here: https://gaston-balande.com/. There are two volumes of catalogue raisonné, and a third is in preparation. His works are held in numerous museums in France and abroad. This oil on canvas is in good original condition; I only note two or three minor surface chips. The painting will be delivered in a lovely modern frame. Guaranteed authentic.
