"Napoleon III Slanted Desk"
A beautiful rosewood and palisander veneered desk. Curved on all sides, it opens with a drop-front. The interior features three small drawers and a large secret compartment, and the top is leather-covered. Richly ornamented with finely chased gilt bronze: an openwork gallery with fleur-de-lis motifs, framing fillets with pearls and foliage, cherub busts, and floral swags. Polychrome and gilt porcelain medallions, monogram and floral decoration, are set within rocaille frames. The cabriole legs with sabots are finished with a French polish. A high-quality piece, probably the work of Alphonse Giroux. Circa 1860. Overall height 90 cm, height with drop-front open 71 cm, width 75 cm, depth closed 44 cm, depth open 65 cm.
