Pair Of Sheet Metal Wall Sconces With Beveled Mirrors, French Production, Late 19th Century.
A pair of sheet metal wall sconces with beveled mirrors, French manufacture, late 19th century.
Each sconce consists of a folded sheet metal arm supporting a cylindrical candle holder set on a stamped, scalloped drip pan. The background is formed by a circular rosette covered with a mosaic of small mirrors arranged in concentric rays around a central circular mirror. The mirrors, irregularly cut and formerly silvered, show natural oxidation (pitting, stains, and loss of silver plating). This reflective decoration was designed to amplify the flickering light of the candle.
These sconces belong to the tradition of reflector sconces, heirs to 17th-century models, which were still widely used before the widespread adoption of gas lighting.
