Head of Christ – Ecce Homo
Oil on oak panel, octagonal, 8.3 x 5.7 cm
Provenance: private collection Baroness Tony Baert, Belgium
*
This painting depicts the head of Christ crowned with thorns, known as Ecce Home (Behold the Man). The composition was celebrated, first used by Albrecht Bouts and the painting probably dates from the second half of the 16th century, around 1580. Interesting piece, the paint layer covered by discoloured old varnish, and some small blisters and damages to painting. Would benefit from a restoration, which will reveal the original colouring.
