17th Century. Attributed To Pieter Wouwerman. The Halt
Artist: Piéter Wouwerman ( Vieille Attribution)
The Wouwerman family included several painters who left their mark on the Dutch Golden Age. While Philips is the most famous, Pieter painted subjects similar to his brother's, such as landscapes and horses in everyday life. This remarkably executed drawing in ink wash, depicting several small scenes, including a horse drinking in the foreground, demonstrates the artist's extensive knowledge of horses, perfectly capturing their postures. In the background, a figure rests in a seated position. On the back of the drawing bears an early attribution to Pieter, which is not truly contradicted, except for the discovery of a painting by his brother Philips, featuring a horse drinking in the same position in the foreground. A review of Philips's numerous drawings also reveals a certain stylistic similarity. This is also the typical size of his drawings: 15 cm x 18.5 cm. Since the brothers were apparently quite rivals, the debate remains open. The drawing has been framed since the 1950s, and closed ever since, in an antique frame, and presented on a mat with ink-rimmed edges. It is in beautiful original condition and elegantly presented.
