Praxinoscope-théâtre Ancien Signed émile Reynaud – Paris – Late 19th Century
Artist: émile Reynaud
Antique Praxinoscope-Theater Signed by Émile Reynaud – Paris – Late 19th Century. Exceptional and very rare original praxinoscope-theater, signed by Émile Reynaud, inventor of the praxinoscope and absolute pioneer of moving images and pre-cinema. Presented in its original wooden case, this set is a major testament to the history of visual techniques at the end of the 19th century. Detailed Description: This praxinoscope-theater includes: the central mirrored drum, a key element of the device invented by Reynaud; several period illustrated animated strips; the candle lighting system with its brass support; the theater with lithographed scenery, creating a truly animated scene; the illustrated lampshade stamped "Le Praxinoscope"; and the original printed instructions, affixed to the inside of the lid. The entire set is signed by Émile Reynaud, which is particularly rare for this type of object and places it in the category of museum-quality pieces. The chromolithographs are beautifully fresh, with vibrant colors depicting lively scenes typical of the Belle Époque. Historical Context: Invented in 1877, the praxinoscope marked a decisive advance over the zoetrope, offering more stable and luminous animation thanks to its ingenious system of mirrors. Émile Reynaud also created the Théâtre Optique, with which he projected his luminous Pantomimes at the Musée Grévin as early as 1892, well before the Lumière brothers' cinematic projections. The praxinoscope-theater represents the playful and artistic culmination of his research, at the crossroads of science, art, and entertainment.
