Cesare Dell'Acqua was born in Pirano d'Istria in 1821. At the age of twenty-one, he began his true artistic career, making his debut in 1843 at the fourth exhibition of the Trieste Society of Fine Arts.
After completing his studies at the Venice Academy in 1847, he embarked on a European journey, stopping in Vienna and Munich before arriving in Paris. Little remains of the French city due to the Third French Revolution, of which Dell'Acqua's sketchbook, now in the Louvre, remains a testament.
His talent and skill earned him important commissions from Archduke Maximilian of Austria: for his marriage to Princess Charlotte of Belgium, he was asked to depict the ceremony from life, and later he was commissioned to decorate Miramare Castle in Trieste with a historical cycle of paintings.
Military and chivalric honors were also bestowed upon the artist, first by King Leopold, who named him a Knight of his Order in 1863, and then by Maximilian of Austria, with the title of Officer of the Order of Guadalupe the following year. These pictorial cycles, characterized by their spectacular and refined style, brought him further lucrative commissions, notably from the Italian consulate at the Palazzo Herrera and from Philip, Count of Flanders, brother of the King of the Belgians.
He made his international debut with his participation in the Vienna World's Fair in 1873 and the London International Exhibition the following year, sending his works to exhibitions throughout Europe and also to the United States and Australia in subsequent years.
In 1874, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence commissioned a self-portrait for its gallery of famous painters; later, the Milan Academy of Fine Arts appointed him an honorary member of its committee.
His works are now held in the museums of Aversa and Brussels, in the collections of the Belgian kings, as well as in Venice, Padua, Piran d'Istria, Capodistria, and especially Trieste, in the civic museums, at Miramare Castle, and at Villa Vianello.
