Throughout his life, he was fascinated by his travels in Italy. He is considered one of the most renowned Dutch artists, a painter of idyllic Italian landscapes: shepherds and flocks, workers in coastal ports, and figures on the dunes, with cliffs, ships, hills, and trees in the background. Less frequently, he painted allegorical, mythological, and biblical scenes. He left behind more than 800 canvases, 80 prints, and about 500 drawings. His paintings greatly inspired the French Rococo painter Jean Pillement. He first learned to paint from his father, Pieter Claesz, and later from the landscape painters Jan van Goyen and Claes Moeyaert. From 1642, he was a member of the Haarlem painters' guild. In 1645, he joined the Dutch Reformed Church. The following year, he married but was widowed a few years later. He remarried, this time to the daughter of the painter Jan Wils. Around 1650, he explored Westphalia with Jacob van Ruisdael. He traveled to Italy with another painter, possibly his cousin, Jan Baptist Weenix. Around 1660, he worked on an atlas with the engraver Nicolaas Visscherer (which probably explains his early travel). From 1661 to 1670, he lived in Amsterdam, then returned to Haarlem. From 1677 to 1683, he settled again in Amsterdam, where he died. The National Museum in Warsaw holds Berchem's painting, "Haul at the Inn" [1].
