Pair Of Silver Salt Cellars Bearing The Arms Of The Du Fort Family, Clermont-ferrand, 1772-1774

- Length: 79 mm, width: 63 mm, height: 42 mm; weight: 217g
- Very good condition, casting flaws, some small traces of corrosion in the salt cellars
- Provenance: du Fort family (Auvergne-France)
- Pair of oval salt cellars consisting of a cyma recta body with a molded base resting on four scrolled feet. The quatrefoil salt cellar with ribs set into the body is bordered with a cavetto and torus molding.
- These salt cellars reproduce the model produced in 1738 for the King of Denmark by Aymé Joubert [3, p. 128-129 n°66-71]. It is characterized by very pronounced and deep moldings. This model was very successful, and it can be found produced in almost all the Generalities of the kingdom. These salt cellars bear the combined coat of arms of a local family, the du Fort: azure, three ears of wheat or, two and one palewise, the one in base issuing from a terrace of the same, in chief or charged with three azure stars (on the dexter side). These two models are cast from two shells soldered with the salt cellar.
- Hallmarks (on each cast half-shell): Master silversmith: CR surmounted by two fleurs-de-lis, hallmark of Claude Redon from 1763 to 1791 (at least) [2, p.71]; charge: none; discharge: a boar's head, discharge for Clermont-Ferrand from 1768 to 1774 [2 p. 47]; guild: Crowned O for the Clermont-Ferrand guild from 1772 to 1775 [2, p. 47].
