French School Portrait Of Armand De Coulaincourt Duke Of Vicenza Empire Napoleon XIX Century
Small miniature portrait, oval-shaped, made in oil on canvas. The period frame has some defects visible in the photo. The name of the sitter is on the frame, traces of writing also on the remains of the paper as visible in the photo. Period: early 19th century
General and diplomat (Caulaincourt, Aisne, 1773 - Paris 1827). From a general he became a simple soldier in 1793 because of his noblemanship, but after two years Hoche had him reinstated his rank. From 1802 he was Napoleon's aide-de-camp, and from 1807 to 1811 he was ambassador to Russia, where, instead of influencing Alexander I, he was influenced by him. Appointed Foreign Minister, he represented Napoleon at the Congress of Châtillon-sur-Seine (1814), trying in vain to obtain more favorable peace terms for the Empire. When Napoleon fell, Alexander I saved him from exile, although during the Hundred Days he had still been in charge of Foreign Affairs.
