"Louis XVI Period Bergère "
Louis XVI Style Bergère Chair. This elegant bergère chair perfectly illustrates the neoclassical aesthetic that prevailed in France during the reign of Louis XVI, in the last quarter of the 18th century. Characterized by a straight, or square, back, it is distinguished by the rigor of its lines and the balance of its proportions, a departure from the flowing curves of the preceding Rococo style. The structure, of great architectural simplicity, rests on four tapered legs. The front legs are fluted and reeded, highlighting the influence of Antiquity, rediscovered at this time, while the more understated rear legs ensure perfect stability. The slightly recessed armrests terminate in discreetly carved consoles, blending harmoniously into the overall silhouette of the chair. The straight uprights, the rectilinear apron, and the restrained decoration reflect a quest for clarity and order, fundamental values of Louis XVI taste. Intended for both aristocratic apartments and the refined interiors of the upper middle class, this bergère à la reine offered considerable comfort while exuding a restrained elegance, emblematic of French furniture from the late Ancien Régime.
