19th Century Art Cabinet In Marquetry Wood
Magnificent, subtly Baroque art cabinet. Originating from Southern Europe. Early 19th century. Resting on ball feet. In very good condition, which is rare. Inlaid with various fantastic woods, including ebony (black in color). Tortoiseshell and bone were also used. From the 16th century onward, an art cabinet (or Kunstkammer) was used to collect and display special objects. It served as a kind of private museum for wealthy collectors, rulers, or scholars. Such a cabinet housed works of art, scientific instruments, exotic objects, minerals, fossils, and curiosities. The aim was both aesthetic and educational: to impress visitors, but also to symbolically order and understand the world and nature. Everything functions correctly. No inlay pieces are missing. With the exception of one drawer lock, all are in proper working order.
