Japanese Incense Burner Vase, Meiji Era, Circa 1900
Japanese incense burner, Meiji period, circa 1900. Satsuma incense burner, Japan, late Meiji period (1868-1912), intended for export. The koro (ceramic vase) is made of fine crackled Satsuma earthenware decorated with Rakan (Buddhist sages) and the deity Kannon. This collector's item is distinguished by its polychrome enamel work in relief (Moriage technique) and its hand-applied gold gilding. The object is adorned with three Foo Dogs sculpted in gilded terracotta (lid and handles), symbols of protection, and rests on three lion's head feet. The Shimazu clan crest and the "Made in Japan" mark are visible, attesting to its prestigious manufacture at the turn of the 20th century. An authentic Asian piece of high-quality ceramic. In good condition, with wear to the gilding intentionally left unrestored to preserve its authenticity.
