Chinese Scholar's Study, Lacquered Wood, 19th Century
A Chinese scholar's cabinet, known as a "shugui," dating from the late 19th century. The wood is crafted from deep black lacquer, revealing glimpses of a red patina beneath. Inside, a large, open space features two dovetailed drawers. In terms of craftsmanship, the cabinetmaker's butterflies secure the wood, preventing cracks in the lacquer. There are some very minor marks across the grain, but overall it is in superb condition. The design of this scholar's cabinet embodies a restrained elegance, symbolizing the aesthetics of emptiness. It is one of the most representative pieces of Chinese furniture.
