Louis XVI Period Armchair
Chair with lyre-shaped backrest
France, Louis XVI period, circa 1780
Painted beech wood, English-style upholstery
This chair is representative of the Louis XVI style, characterised by a return to antique motifs and a focus on straight, balanced lines. It rests on tapered, fluted legs reminiscent of antique columns. The rectangular, moulded and openwork backrest is decorated with a lyre motif, a symbol of harmony and a neoclassical emblem that was widely used at the end of the 18th century. The fixed upholstery, known as "English-style", reflects the evolution of comfort and the influence of British furniture.
