"Broken Duchess, 19th Century "
A SUPERB Louis XVI style Duchesse Brisée armchair, with a lacquered wood frame and painted in a period cream color. It comprises three elements: a bergère chair, a center stool, and a footstool which is a lower-backed armchair. These different parts are separable and can be used independently. They can therefore be arranged harmoniously on either side of a living room and rearranged as desired. The two bergères have curved, enveloping backs and molded armrests. The lower rails are also carved, as are the corners of the legs, decorated with flowers and all tapered and fluted, just like those of the pouf. This central section with its concave sides unites the whole piece with homogeneity and gives uninterrupted lines to this daybed once reassembled. This cousin of the sofa has had its upholstery completely redone, carefully and in the traditional way by our upholsterer, according to the rules of decorative art of its time. The restoration of this broken Duchess chair and the creation of its three sets are also noteworthy. The fabrics used are made of linen and mostly cotton. The webbing and ball-shaped bases are in excellent condition and have been restored. One will appreciate the great adaptability of this Duchess chair with its full sides, which is an undeniable invitation to rest and relaxation. It skillfully combines charm and comfort, particularly through its sublime upholstery and its deep shape.
