An unnumbered wedding handkerchief (circa 1870-1880) with a very fine lawn center and a Brussels needle lace border in gauze stitch. The fineness, lightness, and transparency of the background, combined with its densely populated design, give this lace its high quality and unique character. Made of simply crossed, extremely fine white cotton thread, its creation required the utmost care to achieve almost surgical precision. Blooming roses with overlapping petals in two rows, vine leaves, florets, spools on stems, and wheels adorned with multiple stitches come together to create a richly detailed design, both complex and delicate. The piece is in excellent condition, having undergone appropriate treatment to remove ingrained dust and soiling without affecting its structure or material. There is no fragility under tension, nor any weakness in the lawn. A very fine piece.
