Infant Jesus In Polychrome Wood, Glass Eyes – 18th Century
Rare sculpture depicting the Infant Jesus, carved in wood and polychrome, dating from the 18th century. The child is shown nude, reclining in a gentle and expressive pose, with carefully modeled facial features and body. The glass eyes give the figure a strong presence and depth, characteristic of early religious sculpture.
The sculpture was originally dressed with a later-added garment, not original, which has been removed in order to present the piece in its authentic condition. The original polychromy is very well preserved and displays rich, vivid colors, with a few localized losses consistent with use and the age of the piece.
Dimensions:
• Length: 33 cm
• Weight: 550 g
Condition:
Condition consistent with an 18th-century object. Losses to the polychromy are visible, notably on one toe and on the fingers of the right hand. There is an old crack at the back of the left thigh, as well as a loss at the back of the right calf. These signs of age do not detract from the overall reading of the sculpture and testify to its authenticity and history.
An evocative piece of religious art, full of sensitivity and spirituality, intended for a collector, an enthusiast of sacred art, or for display in a private interior or chapel. The sculpture could also be used in an antique or collector’s Nativity scene during the Christmas season.
