This impressive and atmospheric portrait depicts King William III, sovereign prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel within the Dutch Republic from the 1670s, and later King of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1689 until his death in 1702. Painted around 1680, the monarch stands on the battlefield, clad in full armor, wearing a long, fashionable wig, a finely worked lace cravat, and a sumptuous pale blue silk bow tie. He holds a silver-pommeled baton of command. This refined and highly sensitive work is a perfect example of early propaganda portraiture. Such images were an essential tool for King William and his supporters, allowing them to emphasize and glorify his importance and promote his cause. William III (1650-1702), reigned 1689-1702. Born and raised in the Netherlands, William III was the posthumous son of Stadtholder William II. Born just eight days after his father's death, this Dutch prince would go on to transform British history alongside his wife. He reigned with Mary II, his wife, in a unique joint monarchy, a system that occurred only once in the country's history. His reign was marked by fundamental changes to the British constitution, most notably the adoption of the Bill of Rights in 1689. This pivotal law established parliamentary sovereignty, laying the foundations for modern democracy. His youth unfolded against the backdrop of the rising republican movement, as his father's attempt to seize personal power provoked a strong reaction. He became a gifted student of languages, growing up frugal, temperate, and reserved, yet capable of profound devotion, such as to his faithful Bentinck. William married his cousin Mary, daughter of James II and Anne Hyde, in 1677. William's lifelong ambition was to prevent France from expanding its territories, and all his dealings with Great Britain were guided by this objective. In 1688, fearing an alliance between James II and France, he accepted the invitation of seven English dignitaries to land in Britain with an army to safeguard Protestant liberties. He invaded the country, encountered little resistance, and, after James II's flight, was crowned jointly with Mary. He displayed great magnanimity towards his enemies and remarkable skill in making the most of the English political situation, despite strong opposition to his rule. His reign was marked by further restrictions on royal power and increased religious tolerance, but also by wars in Europe, battles in Scotland, and devastating wars in Ireland. High-resolution images available upon request. International shipping. Canvas: 76.5 cm x 63.5 cm / 30 in x 25 in. Frame: 88.5 cm x 78.5 cm / 35 in x 31 in.
