An early 17th century Augsburg miniature collector cabinet
Dimensions: h. 18 cm, w. 19 cm, d. 14.5 cm.

This charming little cabinet is inlaid on all sides with various native woods: walnut, maple, and fruitwoods. It opens with a drop-front revealing eight drawers decorated with marquetry depicting imaginary cities. The interior and exterior of the drop-front feature more elaborate marquetry in the center, depicting architectural landscapes interspersed with small sprigs of vegetation, hence the name "wild grass" cabinets for these pieces.
It rests on four feet and has a handle on top.
The lock is in working order, and a key is included.

These cabinets were originally intended for collectors and were designed to adorn cabinets of curiosities (Kunstkammer and Wonderkammer), often used to house numerous collections of rare and precious objects thanks to their many drawers.
