Signed Léon Haffner, official painter of the French Navy. Framed under glass. 44 × 55 cm. Léon Haffner was born on December 4, 1881, in Paris, into a middle-class family. After secondary studies in science, he turned to drawing. A rich and varied career followed. He illustrated numerous magazines, including Le Bulletin, Le Journal de la Marine, Le Yacht Club de France, and Le Grand Larousse. His illustrations also delighted the passionate readers of the maritime novelist Paul Chack. Throughout his life, Haffner contributed to many magazines, the French Maritime League, and numerous associations. This efficiency and dedication to his work earned him numerous awards, including his appointment as an official painter of the French Navy in 1918. He was a member of the French Navy painters from 1918, while working at the French Maritime League. He was a friend of many prominent figures in the maritime world: Marin Marie, Jean Charcot, and Virginie Hériot. His works were exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, and in 1991 and 1993 at the Katia Granoff Gallery in Honfleur. At the beginning of the 20th century, sailing was a pastime reserved for a limited clientele. Léon Haffner was a pioneer, highlighting the unique poetry of yachting competitions. His work constitutes a source of documentation of unparalleled quality and precision. He acquired this knowledge through contact with these racing yachts, and of course, by sailing himself. Thus, Léon Haffner traversed the 20th century, leaving his mark on the national, merchant, fishing, and pleasure marine industries with his art and talents. Paris, Musée de la Marine. Good condition.
