Superb oil on canvas measuring 45cm x 54cm plus frame 49cm x 58cm, depicting peasants working to gather hay. Signed lower right CHAGNIOT. Alfred Jean CHAGNIOT, born in Paris in 1905, died in the same city in 1991. French Post-Impressionist painter. He was a student of Montézin. In Paris since 1936, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1938, hors concours (outside of competition). He received numerous awards, including the Bashkirtseff Prize and the Fernand Renaud Prize. He also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Winter Salon, and various peripheral salons, receiving several awards. In 1971, he won the Grand Prix at the Salon de l'École Française and was the guest of honor at the Musée du Luxembourg in 1990. A retrospective was held in Croissy in 1993. This is a work of very high quality by an artist who is increasingly sought after by French and international collectors. Very good condition.
